SABR 47: Listen to highlights from the Jim Bouton: A Life in Baseball panel

At SABR 47 on Saturday, July 1, the Jim Bouton: A Life in Baseball panel at the Grand Hyatt New York honored one of baseball’s most iconic figures. Bouton was a star pitcher with the New York Yankees and the author of Ball Four, his first-person diary of the 1969 season, which is considered one of the most insightful and humorous books published in the 20th century.

The panel included Bouton, his wife Paula Kurman, authors Mark Armour, Mitchell Nathanson, and Marty Appel, and moderator Jim Thorn, MLB’s Official Historian.

SABR 47: Listen to highlights from the It Ain’t Over: The Legacy of Yogi Berra panel

At SABR 47 on Saturday, July 1, the It Ain’t Over: The Legacy of Yogi Berra panel looked at a beloved Yankees great and American cultural icon at the Grand Hyatt New York.

The panel included Lindsay Berra, Yogi’s granddaughter and an MLB.com correspondent, New York Times reporter Harvey Araton, best-selling author George Vecsey, and moderator Dave Kaplan, founding director of the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center.

SABR 47: Listen to highlights from Keith Olbermann’s talk on baseball cards

At SABR 47, we were joined by a longtime SABR member and enthusiastic baseball card collector and historian, Keith Olbermann, who spoke at the inaugural meeting of the SABR Baseball Cards Research Committee on Saturday, July 1 at the Grand Hyatt New York.

Olbermann spoke candidly about such topics as his own origins as a card collector, SABR’s founding by memorabilia collectors, and why his mother never thew out his own childhood cards.

In Memoriam: David Vincent

SABR member David Vincent, 67, of Centreville, Virginia, the preeminent expert on the history of home runs — which earned him the nickname “The Sultan of Swat Stats” — died on Sunday, July 2 after a long battle with stomach cancer.

Vincent was the 1999 recipient of the Bob Davids Award, SABR’s highest honor; the first and only secretary for Retrosheet; and the Washington Nationals’ lead official scorer since their inception in 2005.

“David was near the top of a short list of people who had a profound and lasting impact on SABR, from his service on the Board of Directors to being the go-to reference for home runs to his Bob Davids Award,” SABR President Vince Gennaro said. “His impact will live on for many years to come.”

For a man so well versed in the game’s statistics, Vincent’s accomplishments in baseball are almost innumerable.

Services are scheduled for Monday, July 10. SABR members and friends can offer condolences to the family beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Cemetery next door.  

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in David’s memory to one of the following: Umps Care at UmpsCare.com or Centreville United Methodist Church, 6400 Old Centreville Rd, Centreville, VA 20121.

SABR 47: Hildebrandt, Macaluso win 2017 presentation awards

Chuck Hildebrandt has won the 2017 Doug Pappas Award for the best oral research presentation and Richard Macaluso has won the SABR Convention Poster Presentation Award for the best poster presentation at SABR 47 in New York City.

Hildebrandt, the chairman of SABR’s Baseball and the Media Committee, won the Pappas Award for his presentation, “Does Changing Leagues Affect Player Performance, and How?” which he delivered Thursday, June 29 during SABR 47 at the Grand Hyatt New York. The Chicago resident is a previous winner of the Pappas Award, in 2015 for “‘Little League Home Runs’ in MLB History.”

Macaluso, a retired traffic engineer who has researched and collected catcher’s mitts for 30 years, won the SABR Convention Poster Presentation Award for his poster, “The Evolution of Baseball’s Catcher’s Mitt, 1888-2015.”

SABR 47: Dan Massey, powerhouse past champs win SABR Trivia Contest in battle of heavyweights

Dan Massey of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, won the individual SABR 47 Trivia Contest in dramatic fashion, breaking a tie with two-time defending champion Rob Rafal on the final question on Saturday night at the Grand Hyatt New York.

Massey, who entered the second half down by 13 points, rallied to tie the score on the penultimate question about John Olerud hitting for the cycle, then buzzed in with the correct answer on a question about the Chalmers car company sponsoring the 1910 most valuable player award to win it all. Massey was also the winner of the 2014 trivia contest in Houston.

Rafal, of Douglaston, New York, earned a measure of revenge in the team final, joining with past champions Mike Caragliano, Bill Carle, and Mark Kanter — “the 1927 Yankees of trivia,” as moderator D. Bruce Brown called them — to easily defeat the team of Massey, Rod Merkle, Jesse Marquart, and Bob Whelan.

The powerhouse foursome of Rafal, Caragliano, Carle, and Kanter — who called themselves “Boc-c-a-BELLA!” — has now combined for 38 SABR Trivia Contest championships.

Save the date! SABR 48 will be held in Pittsburgh in 2018

Save the date! SABR will be returning to the Steel City for our 48th national convention on June 20-24, 2018, at the Wyndham Grand in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Registration information will be available at SABR.org/convention in early 2018. The convention location is contingent on a Pirates’ homestand that weekend.

The Wyndham Grand is conveniently located within walking distance from PNC Park and a light rail station, many downtown cultural amenities, and right across the street from the picturesque 36-acre Point State Park where the three rivers converge.

SABR 48 will be our second convention held in Pittsburgh and first since 1995. Our 25th annual convention that year featured a keynote speech from former Pirates manager Chuck Tanner and panel discussions commemorating the 1960 and 1971 World Series champions. SABR’s 2018 national convention will be our 48th annual gathering; the organization’s founding in Cooperstown in 1971 is counted as the first.

SABR 47: Bob Caruthers selected as Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend for 2017

Robert Lee “Bob” Caruthers has been selected as SABR’s Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend for 2017. The announcement was made Saturday, July 1 at the Nineteenth Century Committee’s annual business meeting held at SABR 47 in New York.

In May, members of SABR submitted their votes for the 2017 Overlooked 19th Century Base Ball Legend — a 19th-century player, manager, executive or other baseball personality not yet inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

Previous Overlooked Legends were Pete Browning in 2009, Deacon White in 2010, Harry Stovey in 2011, Bill Dahlen in 2012, Ross Barnes in 2013, Doc Adams in 2014, Tony Mullane in 2015, and Jack Glasscock last year. White became the first Overlooked Legend to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.

Still time to register for 2017 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference

The 20th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, hosted by SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee, will be returning to its roots on July 27-30, 2017, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, site of the first Negro League conference in 1998.

Non-SABR members: $200. Students: $135 for SABR members, $150 for non-members. Single-day rate for Friday or Saturday: $90 for SABR members, $100 for non-members. The Malloy Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives. For the past 19 years, the event has been the only symposium dedicated exclusively to the examination and promotion of black baseball history. The conference is open to baseball and history fans of all ages. Each year, monies are targeted to donate books to schools or libraries; raise funds for the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project; and award scholarships to high school seniors in a nationwide essay contest and a nationwide art contest.

Deadline extended: Apply now for the 2017 SABR Women in Baseball Scholarship

SABR’s Women in Baseball Committee will award one $500 scholarship to a high school senior in its inaugural Women in Baseball Essay Contest in 2017.

Students must write an essay of 1,500 words or less addressing the following question: “Choose one person or event in women’s baseball history that you believe has made a significant impact on the game and explain the importance.”

  • 1951 New York Giants bios now posted online: In SABR’s The Team That Time Won’t Forget: The 1951 New York Giants, edited by Bill Nowlin and C. Paul Rogers III and published in 2015, we focused on a team that will forever be in baseball public’s consciousness. But of course, there is much more to the story of that famous team than Bobby Thomson‘s dramatic home run (albeit the most famous and probably the most dramatic home run in baseball history) and sign stealing. The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in our 1951 Giants book can now be read online. You can also download the e-book for free or purchase the paperback edition at 50% off by clicking here.   • Get involved: Have memories of a game you attended? Or a game you watched that caught your interest? Write about it! Writing for the Games Project is an easy way to get involved as a SABR member. Find out how by reading the Games Project FAQs section or checking out the Authors’ Guidelines. We have editors and fact checkers who are willing to help you write your first article.
  • Contributor Release Form: As of January 1, 2017, all writers publishing articles (biographies, essays, game pieces, etc.) are being asked to sign a Contributor Release Form which can be sent via email to jpomrenke@sabr.org or hard copy to SABR, 555 N.
