This Week in SABR: June 16, 2017

Welcome to “This Week in SABR!” Click here to view this week’s newsletter on the web. Here’s what we’ve been up to as of June 16, 2017:

SABR 47: Casey Stengel: A Man for All Seasons

We’re excited to announce another featured panel at SABR 47 in New York City.

The SABR 47 convention will be held June 28-July 2, 2017, at the Grand Hyatt New York in midtown Manhattan. All baseball fans are welcome to attend. Full registration or single-day registration can be purchased online by clicking here or on-site during convention registration hours beginning on Wednesday, June 28 at the Grand Hyatt.

Casey Stengel: A Man For All Seasons, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, will focus on one of New York City’s most beloved baseball figures.

Casey Stengel spent 30 of his 55 baseball seasons in New York, as the only man to wear the uniforms of the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, New York Yankees, and New York Mets. He spanned from John McGraw to Tug McGraw, and his baseball universe extended from the playing fields to the hotel bars, from the players to “my writers” to the fans. He lived at the Essex House Hotel during his Yankee and Met years, and was always ready to talk baseball with anyone he encountered. He had no hobbies — he didn’t hunt, fish, golf, go to the movies, or play cards — and he got through the offseason by reading The Sporting News and giving baseball speeches. As a player, he would have been an occasional All-Star. As a manager, he hit the heights and the depths of the profession, winning 10 AL pennants and seven World Series championships. MLB Network named him the greatest character in the history of the game; you could look it up.

Our panelists are expected to include:

  • Ira Berkow, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and retired columnist with the New York Times
  • Steve Jacobson, retired Newsday writer and author
  • Marty Appel, author of Casey Stengel: Baseball’s Greatest Character
  • Moderator: Ed Randall, host of “Talking Baseball” on WFAN Radio and MLB Network Radio

Click here to learn more about our featured speakers and panelists. Please note: All speakers are subject to change depending on availability.

For more information, visit SABR.org/convention.

We’re pleased to announce that Della Britton Baeza, the President and CEO of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, has been added to the A Celebration of 70 Years: Jackie Robinson’s Journey panel on Friday, June 30 at SABR 47.

She will join William C. Rhoden, columnist and editor-at-large for TheUndefeated.com and former award-winning columnist and author at the New York Times; Lee Lowenfish, author of Branch Rickey: Baseball’s Ferocious Gentleman, and moderator Larry Lester, SABR Negro Leagues Committee chair and co-organizer of the annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, to discuss the legacy of Brooklyn Dodgers pioneer Jackie Robinson.

*****

These informal Q&A sessions will be focused on baseball-oriented techniques and resources that are available to help you improve your research and writing. Whether you are an experienced SABR researcher or a first-time author, you can learn something new about information and tools — both online and off — that can help aid your baseball research.

Here is the schedule for the How to Do Baseball Research table:

  • 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m., Thursday, June 29: SABR Director Bill Nowlin will be available to discuss SABR publications and answer questions related to SABR’s book projects and journals
  • 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Friday, June 30: SABR Vice President Leslie Heaphy will be available to discuss research resources and answer questions on improving your research techniques

Please check the SABR 47 schedule as more times and guest speakers are added to the How to Do Baseball Research table.

SABR 47: Looking for on-site presentation judges

On-site judges are needed for SABR 47 research presentations. Each judge will be responsible for viewing and evaluating oral and poster presentations during SABR 47 in New York City.

Judges need not be “experts” in particular topics. They may choose which oral presentations they wish to evaluate, but are requested to judge all oral presentations they attend.

Through on-site judging, the most highly regarded presentations will receive the Doug Pappas Award for best oral presentation and the SABR Convention Poster Presentation Award for best poster presentation. The Pappas Award winner will have the opportunity to repeat that presentation on Saturday evening.

If you’re interested, send a message to the Research Presentations email at sabr2017presentations@gmail.com and to Neal Traven at beisbol@alumni.pitt.edu.

SABR Digital Library: The 1967 Impossible Dream Red Sox

It’s the 50th anniversary of the Impossible Dream, so add this new baseball book from the SABR Digital Library to your collection:

The 1967 Impossible Dream Red Sox: Pandemonium on the Field
Edited by Bill Nowlin and Dan Desrochers

Associate Editors: Mark Armour, Len Levin, and Wayne McElreavy

ISBN (paperback): 978-1-943816-49-1, $21.95

ISBN (ebook): 978-1-943816-48-4, $9.99

8.5 x 11″, 521 pages

The ‘67 Red Sox fulfilled a seemingly Impossible Dream, overcoming 100-to-1 odds by climbing out of ninth place to capture the pennant for the first time in 21 years. Thousands of delirious fans streamed onto the field at Fenway Park mobbing the team, dismantling the scoreboard, climbing the screen behind home plate. It truly was, in the words of Sox radio announcer Ned Martin, “pandemonium on the field.”

As Peter Gammons once wrote of this great season, “It wasn’t always the way it is now, and might never have been but for ’67.”

This book is a tribute to the members of the Impossible Dream team, including biographies of all 39 players that year as well as appreciations of this remarkable season by an all-star lineup featuring Joe Castiglione, Ken Coleman, Gordon Edes, Peter Gammons, Jim Lonborg, and many more. The book also presents over 300 rare photographs and memorabilia from this special Red Sox season.

A project of the Boston chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research, this volume gathers the collective efforts of more than 60 SABR members and friends of the nonprofit research society.

Contributors include: Ron Anderson, Andy Andres, Jeff Angus, Mark Armour, Jonathan Arnold, Eric Aron, Fr. Gerry Beirne, Charlie Bevis, Ray Birch, Andrew Blume, Maurice Bouchard, Bob Brady, Steve Buckley, Frederick C. “Rick” Bush, John Cizik, Alan Cohen, Herb Crehan, Dan Desrochers, Alex Edelman, Gordon Edes, Edwin Fernandez, Peter Gammons, Tom Harkins, Joanne Hulbert, Richard Johnson, Mark Kanter, David Laurila, Bob LeMoine, Len Levin, Diane MacLennan, Barb Mantegani, Les Masterson, Wayne McElreavy, Bill Nowlin, Royse Parr, Mike Richard, Doug Skipper, Harvey Soolman, Mark S. 4 new SABR biographies published

Four new biographies were posted this week as part of the SABR Baseball Biography Project, which brings us to a total of 4,081 published biographies. Here are the new bios published this week:

All new biographies can be found here: SABR.org/bioproj/recent

1951 New York Giants biographies now posted online

In SABR’s The Team That Time Won’t Forget: The 1951 New York Giants, edited by Bill Nowlin and C. Paul Rogers III and published in 2015, we focused on a team that will forever be in baseball public’s consciousness. But of course, there is much more to the story of that famous team than Bobby Thomson‘s dramatic home run (albeit the most famous and probably the most dramatic home run in baseball history) and sign stealing.

The 1951 Giants are also of historic significance because of their role in the integration of baseball. It was the year Willie Mays first showed his brilliance to major-league audiences, in late May joining black teammates Monte Irvin, Hank Thompson, and Ray Noble. At the time, the Dodgers and Giants had most of the smattering of African-American players in the big leagues, and it is no surprise that those two teams battled down to the wire for the National League pennant.

The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in our 1951 Giants book can now be read online at: SABR.org/category/completed-book-projects/1951-new-york-giants

You can also download the e-book for free or purchase the paperback edition at 50% off by clicking here. SABR members can download all SABR Digital Library e-books for free at SABR.org/ebooks.
