SABR 47: Early registration now open for 2017 national convention in New York City

We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a spectacular SABR 47 convention, June 28-July 2, 2017, at the Grand Hyatt New York. Conference and hotel registration is now available. This year’s SABR National Convention will combine some familiar SABR traditions along with a number of new events. For the second year in a row and third time in four years, SABR will present “A Day at the Ballpark” before the New York Mets game on Friday, June 30 at Citi Field. Special thanks to the Mets staff for this great opportunity and for offering us a large block of tickets in the Big Apple Reserved section at an affordable price. A special ballpark session will be held at Citi Field on Friday afternoon, followed by the game that night between the Mets and the Phillies. More details on the guest speakers will be announced soon, but you can be sure we will have an All-Star lineup.

SABR 47 will feature top speakers from Major League Baseball, the Yankees and Mets, as well as from around the baseball community and leading members of the media that call New York home. We will announce the full slate of panels and speakers later this spring.

As always, there will be 32 research presentations by SABR members, research committee meetings — many of which will feature special guest speakers — the annual meetings for committee and chapter leaders, the SABR Trivia Contest, and the Annual Business Meeting. In the early evening on Thursday, June 29, SABR will host a special Awards Reception. The reception will feature the announcement of SABR’s annual awards — including the Bob Davids Award, our highest honor — plus an array of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The reception will be held this year in place of the Awards Luncheon. The Donor Breakfast will be held as usual on Saturday, July 1, and the SABR Trivia Contest finals will be held on Saturday night. The convention will once again offer an excellent opportunity for members and non-members to catch up with friends and talk baseball.

The Grand Hyatt New York, one of the city’s most historic and luxurious hotels, is conveniently located in Midtown Manhattan just steps from Grand Central Terminal and within walking distance of many major attractions, including Times Square, the Empire State Building, and the New York Public Library.

We’re again offering a special all-inclusive rate for the annual SABR convention. For $319, a savings of $39 off the regular rate, SABR members can get:

    Non-members can pay $394 for the all-inclusive rate. The deadline to register with the all-inclusive rate is Monday, May 1, 2017.
  • Hotel: The special SABR group rate at the Grand Hyatt New York of $199/night (plus tax) is only available to registered convention attendees. After you register for the SABR 47 convention, you will receive an e-mail confirmation with details on how to book your hotel room at the SABR group rate. There are a limited number of rooms in our group block and it will be virtually impossible to find a comparable rate at a top NYC hotel in the Midtown area, so be sure to register for SABR 47 early!
  • Awards Reception: SABR will host a special Awards Reception in the early evening on Thursday, June 29 at the Grand Hyatt New York. The Awards Reception will feature the announcement of SABR’s annual awards — including the Bob Davids Award, our highest honor — plus an array of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The reception will be held this year in place of the Awards Luncheon. One ticket to the Awards Reception is included in the all-inclusive package or guest tickets are available for $69 when you register for SABR 47.

Early registration ends February 15 for 2017 SABR Analytics Conference

Early registration is still open for the sixth annual SABR Analytics Conference on March 9-11, 2017, in Phoenix, Arizona, but you should register before February 15 to take advantage of the early registration discounted rate. Our special group rate at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix also expires on February 15, 2017.

Announcing finalists for the 2017 SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards

We’re pleased to announce the finalists for the 2017 SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards, which will recognize baseball researchers who have completed the best work of original analysis or commentary during the preceding calendar year.

Nominations were solicited by representatives from SABR, Baseball Prospectus, FanGraphs, The Hardball Times, and Beyond the Box Score. Here are the finalists for the 2017 SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards:

Details and criteria for each category can be found here. Only one work per author was considered as a finalist.

Voting for the winners will be conducted online beginning next week at SABR.org, BaseballProspectus.com, FanGraphs.com, HardballTimes.com, and BeyondtheBoxScore.com, with results weighted equally at 20%.

The SABR Analytics Conference is pleased to host the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Click here for more details.

In the Diamond Dollars Case Competition, undergraduate, graduate and professional school students from colleges and universities across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season. The cases are developed by SABR President Vince Gennaro, author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball, and consultant to MLB teams. The Diamond Dollars Case Competition is the first national competition to be based solely on baseball operations issues.

Four- to five-person student teams are asked to evaluate a baseball operations case problem. The student team presents their analysis and recommendations to a panel of judges that includes MLB front office executives. More than a dozen alumni from the first five Diamond Dollars Case Competitions have secured internships or permanent positions within Major League Baseball.

SABR 47: Call for presentations

SABR invites all members to present their research findings to their colleagues attending SABR 47, which will be held June 28-July 2, 2017, at the Grand Hyatt New York in Midtown Manhattan. Early registration rates and hotel information are now available at SABR.org/convention.

Oral presentations are expected to last 20 minutes, followed by a five minute question-and-answer period. Posters will be presented, with the author on-hand to discuss the work, during a poster session of 90 or so minutes, and will probably remain on display throughout the convention.

Through on-site judging, the most highly-regarded presentations will receive the Doug Pappas Award for best oral presentation and the USA Today Sports Weekly Award for best poster presentation. 

The submission deadline for SABR 47 abstracts is midnight PST, Sunday, FEBRUARY 26, 2017.

Students: Apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 47 in New York City

With generous funding from The Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 47 on June 28-July 2, 2017, in New York City. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250.

The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage high school and college-level student engagement with baseball research and to engender an active interest in baseball and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend SABR’s annual convention and to introduce them to fellow SABR members. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Jeff Schatzki at jschatzki@sabr.org no later than Saturday, April 1, 2017.

Save the date! SABR Day is coming up on January 28

We hope you’ll join us for the eighth annual SABR Day, scheduled for Saturday, January 28, 2017. Find details on more than 40 SABR Day chapter meetings around the U.S., Canada, and the Dominican Republic at SABR.org/sabrday.  

Regional SABR meetings are open to all baseball fans and are usually free to attend, so bring a friend! Guest speakers often include current and former baseball players, managers, umpires, executives, scouts, writers and authors.

The Tony Conigliaro Award is given each year to the MLB player who “overcomes an obstacle and adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination, and courage that were trademarks of Tony Conigliaro.” Conigliaro was hit in the face by a pitch in 1967. His injuries were so severe that he did not return to the playing field until 1969, homering on Opening Day. Despite his dramatic return, Conigliaro continued to be plagued with vision problems and was forced to retire at age 30. Instituted in 1990 by the Red Sox to honor Conigliaro after his death, the award has been given to 29 players including Rocco Baldelli, Dickie Thon, Jim Abbott, Curtis Pride, and R.A. Dickey. The life stories of these players have been gathered in this book through the collective efforts of 27 authors and editors who are members of SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research.

Professional athletes perform seemingly superhuman feats at work every day. While they possess extraordinary skills, they, too, must persevere through human struggles, both physical and personal. Many MLB players have overcome significant adversity, obstacles, and disabilities to achieve their dreams on the diamond. The 29 athletes who have been presented with the Tony Conigliaro Award offer inspirational examples of ballplayers who have overcome significant adversity to enable them to pursue their professional careers.

Bagwell, Raines, Rodriguez elected to Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017

Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, and Ivan Rodriguez were announced as the newest inductees to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on January 18, 2017.

Bagwell, the unanimous 1994 NL MVP and star first baseman for the Houston Astros, received 86.2 percent of the 442 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in his seventh year on the ballot. He will join his longtime teammate and friend Craig Biggio, who was elected in 2015, in the Hall of Fame this summer.

Raines, the Montreal Expos speedster with the fifth-highest total of stolen bases in baseball history, received 380 votes (86.0 percent) in his 10th and final year on the writers’ ballot. His campaign surged past the 75-percent threshold required for election after an initial total of 24.3 percent in 2008.  

Rodriguez became the second catcher, along with Johnny Bench, to make it to the Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot. He won 13 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and was named American League MVP in 1999. He received 336 votes (76 percent).

The 2017 Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will take place July 28-31 in Cooperstown, New York.

San Diego Padres closer Trevor Hoffman fell five votes shy of the required 332 for election, finishing with 74.0 percent in his second year on the ballot. A record nine players received votes on more than half the ballots cast, including first-timer Vladimir Guerrero (71.7 percent), followed by Edgar Martinez (58.6), Roger Clemens (54.1), Barry Bonds (53.8), Mike Mussina (51.8), and Curt Schilling (52.3).

Each year, SABR’s Deadball Era Committee presents the Larry Ritter Book Award to recognize the best new baseball book primarily set in the Deadball Era that was published during the previous calendar year.

Research Committee news

Here are the new SABR research committee updates this week:

  • Baseball and the Arts: The Baseball and the Arts Committee has announced plans for a new SABR publication focused on baseball and the arts, including poetry, music, essays, fiction, and visual art. First, we need a couple of motivated, interested souls to join an editorial board to review the deluge expected from SABR members. If you have an interest in serving as an editor or future contributor, please contact Joanne Hulbert at jhulbert@earthlink.net.
  • Ballparks: The Ballparks Committee has launched new social media accounts to help promote its work, led by Kevin Johnson. On Twitter, Ballparks updates can now be found at SABR Ballparks and Twitter at @SABRBallparks.
