SABR Landmarks Committee unveils new Baseball Grave Map
The SABR Landmarks Committee is thrilled to introduce the new SABR Baseball Graves Map. Using data graciously provided by former SABR Director Fred Worth, the Baseball Graves Map contains burial locations of over 9,000 players, managers, owners, executives, and other significant figures from Major League Baseball, the Negro Leagues, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and more.
Worth has spent nearly two decades visiting baseball grave sites around the globe, beginning with a 2004 trip to Hall of Famer Travis Jackson’s grave in Waldo, Arkansas, near his home. Worth has supplemented his own travel database with information on burials from the SABR Biographical Research Committee, Gary Ashwill of the Seamheads Negro League Database, Retrosheet, family members of players, and other sources.

Read SABR biographies of new Hall of Fame inductees
On Sunday, July 23, the Baseball Hall of Fame welcomes two new members: Scott Rolen and Fred McGriff. SABR celebrates Cooperstown’s Class of 2023 by highlighting Research Collection articles featuring the new inductees.
SABR’s BioProject provides comprehensive biographies of both new inductees. Author Tim Odzer tells the story of the decorated third baseman Rolen, who earned eight Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and seven All-Star selections, helping the St. Louis Cardinals win two NL pennants and the 2006 World Series. Peter M. Gordon explores the Crime Dog’s journey to Cooperstown as the first player to hit 30 or more home runs in a season for five different clubs.
SABR’s Games Project also includes stories that shine a light on players inducted in the Class of 2023. McGriff’s exploits during the Atlanta Braves’ 1990s dynasty are well chronicled. Rolen’s key home run in Game 7 to help the Cardinals clinch the 2004 NL Championship Series is also told here.
In addition, former Brooklyn Dodgers great Carl Erskine will be honored in Cooperstown with the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award. Click here to read Erskine’s SABR biography, by Bob Hurte.
- Induction Day SABR meeting in Cooperstown: SABR’s Cliff Kachline Chapter will hold its annual Induction Day meeting at 6:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 23 at Tillapaugh’s, 28 Pioneer St, Cooperstown, NY 13326. All baseball fans are invited to attend this free, open-to-the-public event. Guest speakers will include authors Jay Jaffe (The Cooperstown Casebook) and Jed Dukett (Jacks: The Most Incredible Home Run Seasons in MLB History), and memorabilia expert Simeon Lipman from Antiques Roadshow.

- For more than a quarter-century, Tom Ruane worked behind the scenes preparing countless files for Retrosheet’s extraordinary database of baseball history — player data, box scores, play-by-play accounts, transaction files, and much more. He died on Tuesday, July 18 at the age of 68. His contributions to baseball research, and the invaluable role he played in making so much information available and accessible for generations to come, cannot be overstated. He was one of the leading lights in the baseball research community since he first joined SABR in 1991. In 1994, he began serving on Retrosheet’s Board of Directors and helped lead the design and implementation of their website in the early 21st century. He led a group of Retrosheet volunteers to create box scores using official dailies and newspaper accounts, an effort requiring painstaking diligence and persistence. Those efforts earned him recognition with SABR’s Bob Davids Award in 2009 and the Henry Chadwick Award in 2016. “Aside from baseball, Tom was consistently cheerful, funny, and an accomplished poet,” said David W. Smith, Retrosheet’s founder and former president. “His loss is a huge blow to Retrosheet, SABR, and the baseball research community at large, all of which are significantly diminished without him.” Click here to read more at SABR.org.
