SABR announces 2018 Henry Chadwick Award recipients

SABR is pleased to announce the 2018 recipients of the Henry Chadwick Award, established to honor the game’s great researchers—historians, statisticians, annalists, and archivists—for their invaluable contributions to making baseball the game that links America’s present with its past.

The 2018 recipients of the Henry Chadwick Award are:

  • Jefferson Burdick (1900-1963) was a pioneer baseball card collector whose invented classifications still govern the hobby; he donated his enormous collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it remains one of the most popular destinations for researchers. He created The American Card Catalog, the bible of the hobby, in 1939, and tribute is paid to his lifelong work any time one brings up T-206 or N-162 or other codes common in the hobby. Burdick was “a collector’s collector,” said Freyda Spira, the Met’s assistant curator in the drawings and prints department. “He didn’t collect cards because of their value but because of his interest in history.” As he wrote in 1948, he regarded his life’s work as “a national collection belonging to everybody.” His quiet joys were not in chasing value or celebrity, or in mere accumulation, but in his research and in the legacy he consciously built, through crippling arthritis, to his dying days.
  • Bob McConnell (1925-2012) was an original SABR member from 1971 and a star researcher in whatever field to which his interest turned. His expertise was on brilliant and thorough display in biographical research, 19th century baseball, and perhaps most notably, the minor leagues. He revamped the John Tattersall Home Run Log, purchased by SABR from the latter’s estate in 1981, and kept it up to date until its publication in 1996 as SABR Presents The Home Run Encyclopedia, a register of every home run ever hit in major-league play. But perhaps McConnell’s greatest legacy is the three-volume Minor League Baseball Stars, which celebrated not only the anecdotes surrounding those second-tier greats, but also documented their statistical records, accurately for the first time. Along with Ray Nemec, Vern Luse, and Bob Davids, McConnell brought to life the golden age of the minor leagues, when many top-rank players preferred to stay closer to home, making salaries greater than they had made in their brief stays in the majors.
  • Tom Shieber (1964 – ) has been one of baseball research’s leading lights for more than two decades.  The founder of SABR’s Pictorial History Committee in 1994, he served as its chairman and newsletter editor for its first several years, and remains one of its top researchers. An expert in 19th-century baseball, among many other areas, he is responsible for locating and correctly identifying the oldest team photograph: that of the New York Gotham club of 1855. His Baseball Researcher blog, in its tenth year, is a delight for anyone interested in the microscopic details of baseball, especially as depicted in photography, imagery, or film. A native of Missouri and a one-time solar physicist at Mt. Wilson, California, since 1998 Tom has been a curator (now senior curator) at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. 
  • Andrew Zimbalist (1947 – ) has been an economics professor at Smith College since 1974, but found time to make his mark as a leading voice in the field of sports economics. His 1992 book Baseball and Billions was a groundbreaking look at money in all aspects of the major and minor leagues. He followed that up with more than 20 other books, including several on baseball: May the Best Team Win: Baseball Economics and Public Policy, In the Best Interests of Baseball? The Revolutionary Reign of Bud Selig, The Sabermetric Revolution: Assessing the Growth of Analytics in Baseball. He is a frequent contributor to documentaries about the game.

By honoring individuals for the length and breadth of their contribution to the study and enjoyment of baseball, the Chadwick Award will educate the baseball community about sometimes little known but vastly important contributions from the game’s past and thus encourage the next generation of researchers.

This year’s conference will feature the high-quality content you’ve always enjoyed at the SABR Analytics Conference and the same number of featured panels and research presentations, but there will be a few changes to the usual schedule: We will begin programming early Friday afternoon on March 9 and will run through Sunday afternoon on March 11. The change in schedule is due to the availability at our host hotel this year.

In addition, the Diamond Dollars Case Competition will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening and the networking reception will be held on Saturday evening, March 10 at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. Lunch, which is included in your conference registration, will be served at noon on Friday — before the regular programming begins — and also on Saturday between the morning and afternoon sessions.

  • Roberto Clemente Museum tours: The Roberto Clemente Museum in Pittsburgh has a special offer for SABR 48 attendees: The museum will host four tours (maximum of 20 people per tour) at $20 per person on Wednesday, June 20. Space is extremely limited, and reservations will only be made on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please call the museum at (412) 621-1268, Ext. 2, to reserve your space. No reservations can be made online; payment is due on-site when you arrive for the tour.   • Yoseloff Scholarship: Students, click here to learn more about a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 48 in Pittsburgh. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 30, 2018.

All SABR 48 attendees will also receive a souvenir print edition of The National Pastime, our annual convention journal, focusing on baseball teams, players and events in the Pittsburgh area. All SABR members, whether you attend the convention or not, will receive the e-book edition of The National Pastime in their inboxes later this summer.

SABR 48: Just 2 days left to submit research presentation abstracts

SABR invites all members to present their research findings to their colleagues attending SABR 48, which will be held June 20-24, 2018, at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh. Early registration is now available at SABR.org/convention.

Oral presentations are expected to last 20 minutes, followed by a five minute question-and-answer period. Posters will be presented, with the author on-hand to discuss the work, during a poster session of 60 minutes and they will remain on display throughout the convention. Through on-site judging, the most highly-regarded presentations will receive the Doug Pappas Award for best oral presentation and the SABR Convention Poster Presentation Award for best poster presentation.

The submission deadline for SABR 48 abstracts is midnight PST, Sunday, FEBRUARY 25, 2018. Click here for complete details and application form.

Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 48 in Pittsburgh

With generous funding from The Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 48 on June 20-24, 2018, in Pittsburgh. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250.

The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage high school and college-level student engagement with baseball research and to engender an active interest in baseball and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend SABR’s annual convention and to introduce them to fellow SABR members. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Jeff Schatzki at jschatzki@sabr.org no later than FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 2018.

Last call for nominations: 2018 SABR Board of Directors election

The SABR Nominating Committee seeks nominations for candidates for the Spring 2018 elections. All candidates for the Board of Directors must have been members of the Society for at least the preceding four years to be eligible for election. Deadline for nominations is February 28, 2018. Nominees must prepare a Candidate Statement Form following guidelines that will be available from any Nominating Committee member.

The Candidate Statement Form must be received by the Nominating Committee chair no later than March 16, 2018.

The offices to be filled:

  • Vice President (2-year term; currently Leslie Heaphy)
  • Secretary (3-year term; currently Todd Lebowitz)
  • Director (3-year term; currently Ty Waterman)

The Nominating Committee also seeks your input. Members are asked to submit office-specific questions for each of the offices open in this election. We also seek input on general questions for every nominee. Candidates will answer selected questions on the Candidate Statement Form. Regional Chapter leaders and Research Committee Chairs are especially encouraged to pass on this request to their respective members to better address member needs.

Self-nominations are welcome. If you would like to nominate yourself or another candidate or suggest a question for the candidates, contact Nominating Committee chair Neal Traven at beisbol@alumni.pitt.edu.

SABR Games Project: Make a donation in memory of Greg Erion

On December 29, 2017, SABR member Greg Erion, 70, who had taken on the brunt of necessary reorganization of the SABR Games Project, died of cancer diagnosed just a few weeks earlier. Despite treatments, Greg worked tirelessly to assure a smooth transition for everyone involved with the Games Project.

Some members closely involved with the Games Project have already made donations to SABR honoring Greg’s memory as a friend and colleague. We ask that others who knew and worked with Greg consider doing the same to honor his leadership, sense of easy cooperation, and tireless work for the advancement of an important SABR initiative.

Not only will a donation in Greg’s name honor him, but it will advance SABR’s continuing work on all fronts and serve the collaborative spirit of the organization.

In Memoriam

  • SABR member Paul Fritz, 88, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, died on January 31, 2018, at Lancaster General Hospital. He joined SABR in 2002 and wrote four baseball books under the nom de plume Max Blue, including Philadelphia’s Phillies: Baseball Thrills in Three Centuries. Born May 17, 1929, in Belleville, Illinois, he was signed to a minor-league contract by the St. Louis Browns, and played two seasons as a catcher and third baseman for the Appleton Papermakers in the Wisconsin State League. After graduating from Washington University of St. Louis in 1951, he joined the US Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the destroyer U.S.S. John R. Craig, followed by three years in the Naval Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant. Paul met and married Lydia, the love of his life, in Hong Kong while still in the Navy. They would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary in April. In 1962 he earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Auburn University, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Oak Ridge (Tennessee) National Laboratory. Thereafter, he began a career in academia, teaching and mentoring graduate students, first at Auburn University and at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and, starting in 1969, at the Hershey Medical Center of Pennsylvania State University, from which he retired in 1993. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg. Click here to read the full obituary online.
