The Pappas Award winner will have the opportunity to repeat that presentation on Saturday evening.

New SABR book on the World Series in the Deadball Era brings baseball history to life
A special new publication produced by SABR’s Deadball Era Research Committee vividly brings back the exploits of Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Home Run Baker, and Babe Ruth to life with more than 250 rare photos:
The World Series in the Deadball Era: A History in the Words and Pictures of the Writers and Photographers
Edited by Steve Steinberg
Foreword by Dr. Charles Alexander
Published by St. Johann Press
ISBN (hardcover): 978-1-9379-4345-5, $45.00
306 pages, 8.5″ x 11″
The game of baseball at the beginning of the 20th century was remarkably similar to the game that is played today, although pitching was dominant and offense was hard to come by. But missing was the coverage by radio, television, motion pictures, audio/video tapes and the internet. Today’s coverage includes not only these new media but also expanded use of newspapers and photography.
The Deadball Era (1901-1919), so named because the ball being used was not the lively ball introduced in the twenties and beyond, demanded that the writers and photographers provide all the information in the form of the printed word and still photography.
Writers included not only known names such as Ring Lardner, Grantland Rice, Damon Runyon, and from that era Tim Murname, Charles Dryden, Hugh Fullerton plus many more, including players, managers, owners, and others, some of whom were “ghosted” by regular sportswriters. Photographers did not have the luxury of instant multiple shots but had to sense the opportunity of when to take the best action photo, hence the often posed photos taken before the game. Yet their instincts led them to some incredible and uncanny shots of action during the game.
The editor, Steve Steinberg, has assembled an excellent and knowledgeable group of researchers and writers from the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) to provide us with a remarkable view of the Word Series in the Deadball Era. You will not be reading about the Deadball World Series from the point of the 21st century, rather you will be transported to this great era that set the groundwork for today’s game.
This book is available for purchase from Amazon.com, your local bookstore, or directly from the publisher at St. Johann Press.

In Memoriam: Red Schoendienst
In his Baseball Hall of Fame induction speech in 1989, Red Schoendienst spoke of the day he and two young friends hitchhiked to St. Louis to try out for the Cardinals: “I never thought that milk truck ride would eventually lead to Cooperstown and baseball’s highest honor.” He also spoke about his attitude toward playing the game: “I would play any position my manager asked. Whatever it took to win, I was willing to do. All I ever wanted was to be on that lineup card and become a champion.”
Schoendienst was a champion ambassador for the Cardinals and the game of baseball all his life, first as a Hall of Fame player in St. Louis and with the Milwaukee Braves, then as a World Series-winning manager, and as a coach and executive for parts of eight decades. The oldest living Hall of Famer died at the age of 95 on Wednesday, June 6, 2018.
As Kristen Lokemoen wrote in her SABR biography of the man affectionately known as Mr. Cardinal, Schoendienst was “an integral part of the Cardinals organization” for every World Series championship between 1946 and 2011. Officially listed as Special Assistant to the General Manager, “at heart he was still a coach, donning a uniform for pregame practice at home games, at which he routinely hit fungoes to infielders.”
The switch-hitting second baseman finished his career with 2,449 hits, 10 All-Star Game appearances — he hit a game-winning home run for the National League in the 14th inning of the 1950 midsummer classic — and World Series rings with the 1946 Cardinals and 1957 Milwaukee Braves. Of the latter team, which starred Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, and Lew Burdette, he said in a SABR Oral History interview in 1987 that the Braves were “the best ballclub I was ever affiliated with, as far as talent. We had everything. We had pitching, hitting, catching. No matter how you look at it, we had a great ballclub. And you can see it by looking at how many of those guys are now in the Hall of Fame.”

4 new SABR biographies published
Four new biographies were posted this week as part of the SABR Baseball Biography Project, which brings us to a total of 4,562 published biographies. Here are the new bios published this week:
- George Blaeholder, by Gregory H. Wolf
- Vince DiMaggio, by Warren Corbett
- Stan Spencer, by Niall Adler
- Farmer Vaughn, by Chris Rainey
All new biographies can be found here: SABR.org/bioproj/recent
- Search for any SABR biography: You can now visit sabr.org/bioproj_search to search for any player — or manager, executive, scout, spouse, broadcaster, or umpire — who appears in the SABR BioProject. You can also browse all of these BioProject categories and a lot more, including 300-game winners, Hall of Famers, 1960s All-Stars, or Negro Leaguers, at our Browse page: sabr.org/bioproj/browse.
- Read bios from SABR’s No-Hitters book: In SABR’s No-Hitters, edited by Bill Nowlin and published in 2017, we focused on pitchers who threw no-hitters and the no-hitters they threw. Naturally, we couldn’t present biographies of everyone who ever threw a no-hitter nor could we present Games Project accounts of all of them. From around 300 no-hitters thrown in the majors (out of over 213,000 games), we have selected 59 no-hitters to include, along with the biographies of the men who threw them. All of the biographies — from Hall of Famers such as Bob Feller, Sandy Koufax, and Randy Johnson to more obscure pitchers such as Larry Corcoran, Charlie Robertson, and Dallas Braden — that appeared in No-Hitters can now be read online at the SABR BioProject. More game summaries from the No-Hitters book will be posted at the SABR Games Project soon. You can also download the No-Hitters e-book for free or purchase the paperback edition at 50% off by clicking here.

Seamheads.com updates Negro Leagues Database with 1938 stats
We are pleased to pass along this update from SABR member Gary Ashwill at Seamheads.com on June 4:
We’ve added the 1938 Negro American League to the database meaning that we now have every major Negro league from 1933 through 1946—with 1947 coming soon.
In 1938 the NAL’s center of gravity moved decisively to the South. The Cincinnati Tigers, St. Louis Stars, and Detroit Stars all folded—while two new clubs in the South were added, the Atlanta Black Crackers and Jacksonville Red Caps. This meant that four of the NAL’s seven teams were now located in the South. And for two of these teams, 1938 marked the high point of their history.
The Memphis Red Sox had finished in seventh place in 1937. For the new season they hired the manager of one of the teams that had folded, Double Duty Radcliffe of the Cincinnati Tigers—and he brought in the core of the Tigers, a very good team that had finished with the second-best overall record in the league, despite missing the split-season playoffs.
