2023 SABR Analytics Conference is now under way!
The 12th annual SABR Analytics Conference kicked off this weekend and will continue through Sunday, March 12. With an attendance of more than 750 combined in-person and virtual student registrants for this event at the Beus Center for Law and Society in Phoenix, Arizona, we’re bringing together the top minds in the baseball analytics community to discuss, debate, and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball.

Early registration is now open for SABR’s annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on July 20-23, 2023, at the St. Regis Hotel in Detroit, Michigan. All baseball fans are welcome to attend.

Dan Levitt, Mark Armour receive SABR Seymour Medal at NINE Conference
Daniel R. Levitt and Mark Armour, authors of Intentional Balk: Baseball’s Thin Line between Innovation and Cheating, received their 2023 SABR Seymour Medal during the 30th annual NINE Spring Training Conference on Saturday, March 4 in Tempe, Arizona.
The Dr. Harold and Dorothy Seymour Medal honors the best book of baseball history or biography published during the preceding calendar year.
The NINE Conference was highlighted by an evening with Maybelle Blair of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, a session honoring the memory of Jean Hastings Ardell, along with research presentations by SABR members Lisa Alexander, Daniel Anderson, Mark Armour, Robert Bellamy, Dave Bohmer, Robert Gorman, Leslie Heaphy, David Krell, Cathy Kreyche, Dan Levitt, Joe Marren, Mark McGee, Fabio Montella, Mitch Nathanson, Roberta J. Newman, Jim Overmyer, Rodney Paul, Ron Rapoport, Rob Sheinkopf, Erik Sherman, Robert Tholkes, Jay Thomas, Evan Thompson, James R. Walker, Kat Williams, and Claudia Wolff. SABR’s Ballpark Figures is a monthly interview series hosted by award-winning writer Shakeia Taylor. On Thursday, March 2, our guests were Jordan Shusterman and Jake Mintz, who have been creating baseball content together online for over a decade. During their senior year of high school, they started a blog and Twitter account called Cespedes Family BBQ as a tribute to one of their favorite players, Yoenis Céspedes.

2023 Diamond Dollars Case Competition winners announced
The 2023 Diamond Dollars Case Competition winners were announced Friday, March 10 during the SABR Analytics Conference.
The winning teams selected were from Washington University of St. Louis, Rice University, Arizona State University, and The Branson School.
The Washington University of St. Louis team — which was picked to deliver an encore presentation in front of the full SABR Analytics Conference on Saturday — included Simon Todreas, Max Hanley, Jake Engelberg, and Cooper Yan.

Call for nominations: 2023 SABR Board of Directors election
The SABR Nominating Committee is now seeking nominations for candidates for the 2023 elections. To be eligible for the Board of Directors, candidates must have been members of the Society for at least the preceding four years. The deadline for nominations is March 22, 2023.
Self-nominations are welcome. If you would like to nominate yourself or another candidate or suggest a question for the candidates, contact Nominating Committee chair Stew Thornley.

Submissions open for fourth edition of Turnstyle: The SABR Journal of Baseball Arts
Submissions are now being accepted for Volume 4 of Turnstyle: The SABR Journal of Baseball Arts.
All SABR members are encouraged to send along your submission, or your questions, to editors Joanne Hulbert or Jay Hurd before June 30, 2023. We are looking for poetry, memoir, artwork, humor, short fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, and parody. Please keep your Turnstyle submission to 1,500 words or less in order to include as many offerings as possible.

Deadline to submit new project proposals to SABR Editorial Board is April 1
SABR’s Editorial Board welcomes new project proposals from members to be considered for publication through the Digital Library, SABR.org, or any other multimedia formats. We strongly encourage new proposals that involve collaboration between SABR research committees and/or chapters, and web-based projects with an eye toward enhanced multimedia presentation.

Next deadline: April 1, 2023 (for publication in late 2024 or 2025)
SABR seeks to publish 2-4 web-based multimedia projects and 6-8 books per year. Book projects should be of a scope that can fit in a single volume, typically between 100,000 and 200,000 total words.

Call for reviewers: SABR 51 presentation abstracts
Volunteers are needed to blind-review submissions for SABR 51 research presentations. Please contact Neal Traven if you are interested in participating in the review process.
SABR 51 is scheduled for July 5-9, 2023, at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. Early registration is now available at SABR.org/convention. (Note: You do not need to be registered for the convention in order to serve as a blind-reviewer.)
Register now for the 2023 SABR Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Conference
Registration is now open for the 14th annual SABR Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference, which will be held on April 28-29, 2023, at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. All baseball fans are welcome to register for this special event.
The 2023 conference will be highlighted by a keynote address from author Jonathan Popovich, along with a panel discussion on baseball’s 19th-century color line with Richard Hershberger, Peter Mancuso, Brian Sheehy, and moderator Bill Ryczek; a 19th-century artifact session with Robert Mayer, Gary Passamonte, and Popovich; a Member Spotlight interview of Robert Mayer by Bob Bailey; plus research presentations and a Sunday morning vintage baseball game at Doubleday Field.
