SABR launches new SocialLink communication tool for members

SABR has launched a new communication tool for members called SocialLink, along with a fresh look for our membership system at profile.sabr.org.

The SocialLink platform will allow for all groups (research committees, chapters, and more) to communicate in online forums. Each chapter and research committee will have its own dedicated discussion forum, and we will also have new community-wide discussion forums that all SABR members can access online or through the SocialLink app.

In addition, members will be able to message one another directly and there will be more traditional social media functionality, allowing all SABR members to connect with each other regardless of chapter affiliation or research committee involvement.

Finally, members who download the SocialLink app will be able to access this functionality from their smartphones or tablets, creating greater access to member benefits and eliminating the need to be on a computer to communicate with other members.

We’ll highlight some of the new features in the SocialLink platform in the coming weeks, but we encourage you to start taking advantage of the new tools available to all SABR members today!

3 days left to submit abstracts for 2019 SABR/IWBC Arizona Fall League Experience

All SABR members are invited and encouraged to submit a research presentation proposal abstract on any topic related to women in baseball for the SABR/IWBC Arizona Fall League Experience on Thursday, October 10 to Saturday, October 12, 2019, in Phoenix, Arizona.

To apply: Please send a 150-200 word abstract to Leslie Heaphy at Lheaphy@kent.edu by September 2, 2019. Please include full contact information and a short bio. Please note: You must be registered for the conference in order to give a presentation.

All baseball fans are welcome to attend the SABR Arizona Fall League Experience.

New speakers announced for SABR Black Sox Scandal Centennial Symposium

We’re excited to announce new speakers for the SABR Black Sox Scandal Centennial Symposium in Chicago.

The SABR Black Sox Scandal Research Committee will host this once-in-a-century event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1919 World Series from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at the Chicago History Museum. All baseball fans are welcome to attend; click here to register.

SABR Defensive Index rankings released through August 18

Arizona shortstop Nick Ahmed and Oakland third baseman Matt Chapman remain in the top spots in their respective leagues in the most recent SABR Defensive Index™ rankings.

For the seventh consecutive season, the SABR Defensive Index will be used to help select the winners of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award® and Rawlings Platinum Glove Award™, presented by SABR. The SABR Defensive Index accounts for approximately 25 percent of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process that will be added to the votes from the managers and coaches.

The final SDI results will be released following the conclusion of the 2019 season at SABR.org/SDI. The SDI is compiled by the SABR Defensive Committee, which includes former SABR Board President Vince Gennaro; Sean Forman of Baseball-Reference.com; Ben Jedlovec, MLB’s Director of Engineering, Data Quality; SABR Director F.X. Flinn; author and defensive metrics expert Chris Dial; and author Michael Humphreys.

Seeking nominations for the 2020 SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards

What are the best baseball analytics articles you’ve read so far in 2019?

We’re seeking nominations for the 2020 SABR Analytics Conference Research Awards, which recognize baseball researchers who have completed the best work of original analysis or commentary during the preceding calendar year in the following categories:

Contemporary Baseball Analysis: Honoring the best analysis focusing on a subject related to the modern game(s), team(s) or player(s).
Contemporary Baseball Commentary: Honoring the best commentary focusing on a subject related to the modern game(s), team(s) or player(s).
Historical Baseball Analysis/Commentary: Honoring the best original analysis or commentary focusing on a subject related to a game(s), team(s) or player(s) throughout baseball history.

Call for papers: 2020 SABR Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference

All SABR members are invited and encouraged to submit a Research Presentation Proposal Abstract on any topic of 19th-century baseball for the 2020 Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The 12th annual Ivor-Campbell Conference is scheduled for April 24-25, 2020.

The deadline for proposal Abstracts is October 31, 2019. Your abstract must be between 200-400 words for a 20- to 25-minute presentation. Please include name, title, and contact information and send your proposal as a Microsoft Word or PDF attachment to Peter Mancuso at peterplus4@earthlink.net.

Join us on September 14 in Philadelphia to honor baseball pioneers Hicks Hayhurst and Octavius Catto

The SABR Nineteenth Century Grave Marker Project will hold a commemoration to honor Philadelphia baseball pioneers Hicks Hayhurst and Octavius Catto in a dual ceremony to further recognize their contributions to American and Philadelphia history.

The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at Mount Peace Cemetery, 3111 W. Lehigh Avenue in Philadelphia. All baseball fans are welcome to attend this free event, which should last about 30 minutes.

A Republican councilman for Philadelphia, Hayhurst was also a baseball player and president of the National Association champion Athletics of Philadelphia of the late nineteenth century. In 1866 Catto, a civil rights activist, helped found one of the earliest black clubs in the U.S., the Pythian Base Ball Club. Together they organized the first widely reported integrated baseball game in United States history in September 1869; the game was the first of its kind in Philadelphia.

SABR’s Connie Mack Chapter will honor the 150th anniversary of the first integrated game between the Olympic Ball Club and Catto’s Pythians Club. The game was played on September 3, 1869, a victory for the Olympics witnessed by 4,000 fans. The SABR Nineteenth Century Gravemarker Project will dedicate a new grave marker for Elias Hicks Hayhurst and his wife Elizabeth.

The day-long Saturday symposium will be devoted to 19th-century baseball as it was played and evolved in Minnesota and the greater Midwest region. The event is a joint project of the SABR Nineteenth Century Committee, SABR’s Halsey Hall Chapter, and the Hennepin County Library.
