We’re just a week away from the seventh annual SABR Analytics Conference, March 9-11 at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix, and we’ve got an All-Star lineup of speakers, panelists and presenters on the schedule this year.

Once again, we’re bringing together the top minds of the baseball analytic community under one roof to discuss, debate and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball. Representatives from more than 25 Major League Baseball front offices are expected to attend this year’s SABR Analytics Conference.

The SABR Analytics Conference will consist of a combination of Guest Speakers, Panels, and Research Presentations — plus the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition, in which undergraduate, graduate, and law school students from across the country analyze and present a real baseball operations decision.

2018 SABR Analytics Conference: Networking Reception

SABR is once again teaming up with the Baseball Industry Network for the 2018 SABR Analytics Conference Networking Reception, which will feature food, drinks and great opportunities to network with baseball professionals and other attendees from the conference.

The reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix, 122 N. 2nd St., Phoenix, AZ 85004.

Admission to the welcome reception is included in your 2018 SABR Analytics Conference registration.

Diamond Dollars Case Competition participating schools

The SABR Analytics Conference is pleased to host the unique Diamond Dollars Case Competition beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 9 at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix in Arizona.

In the Diamond Dollars Case Competition, undergraduate, graduate and professional school students from colleges and universities across the country compete against each other by preparing an analysis and presentation of a baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s GM and his staff is faced with over the course of a season. The cases are developed by SABR President Vince Gennaro, author of Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball, and consultant to MLB teams. The Diamond Dollars Case Competition is the first national competition to be based solely on baseball operations issues.

More than 70 alumni from the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 Diamond Dollars Case Competitions have secured internships or permanent positions within Major League Baseball.

Perry Barber wins inaugural Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award

On behalf of SABR’s Women in Baseball Committee, I’m pleased to announce the inaugural winner of the Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award is longtime umpire and promoter of women in baseball, Perry Barber. Please join us in congratulating Barber for winning this award and thanking her for all she has done for 38 years to promote women’s baseball and create opportunities for women to be a part of the game.

Continuing a tradition of female umpires that stretches back to Amanda Clement in the early 1900s, Barber has umpired around the world at every level of the game. No matter where she is, she is a constant champion of women and their participation in America’s National Pastime. Barber will be presented with her award this June at the SABR 48 national convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The award will be presented to her by Dorothy Seymour Mills, the woman for whom the award is named. We hope you can join us for this ceremony.

SABR’s Women in Baseball Committee established the Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award — “The Dorothy” — named in honor of Dorothy Seymour Mills and her lifetime of contributions to promoting women’s baseball.

SABR 48: Early registration now open for 2018 national convention in Pittsburgh

  • Awards Luncheon: SABR will host a special Awards Luncheon on Friday, June 22 at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh. One ticket to the Awards Luncheon is included in the all-inclusive package or guest tickets are available for $60 when you register for SABR 48.
  • A Day at the Ballpark: For the third year in a row and fourth time in five years, SABR will present “A Day at the Ballpark” before the Pittsburgh Pirates game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, June 22 at PNC Park. Special thanks to the Pirates for this great opportunity and for offering us a large block of tickets in the Corner Box (LF) section at an affordable price of $40 for SABR members ($45 for non-members).   • Roberto Clemente Museum tours: The Roberto Clemente Museum in Pittsburgh has a special offer for SABR 48 attendees: The museum will host four tours (maximum of 20 people per tour) at $20 per person on Wednesday, June 20. Space is extremely limited, and reservations will only be made on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please call the museum at (412) 621-1268, Ext. 2, to reserve your space. No reservations can be made online; payment is due on-site when you arrive for the tour.   • Yoseloff Scholarship: Students, click here to learn more about a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 48 in Pittsburgh. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 30, 2018.

All SABR 48 attendees will also receive a souvenir print edition of The National Pastime, our annual convention journal, focusing on baseball teams, players and events in the Pittsburgh area. All SABR members, whether you attend the convention or not, will receive the e-book edition of The National Pastime in their inboxes later this summer.

Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend SABR 48 in Pittsburgh

With generous funding from The Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school or college students to attend SABR 48 on June 20-24, 2018, in Pittsburgh. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging (double occupancy) up to a total value of $1,250.

The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage high school and college-level student engagement with baseball research and to engender an active interest in baseball and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend SABR’s annual convention and to introduce them to fellow SABR members. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

All applications must be postmarked or e-mailed to Jeff Schatzki at jschatzki@sabr.org no later than FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 2018.

Jerald Podair to receive 2018 Seymour Medal at NINE Conference banquet on Saturday

2018 Seymour Medal winner Jerald Podair will receive his award at the banquet of the 25th annual NINE Spring Training Conference on Saturday, March 3 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Tempe, Arizona (formerly the Fiesta Inn and Resort.)

The banquet includes the Seymour Medal ceremony with Dorothy Seymour Mills, dinner, and the NINE keynote panel discussion on baseball moving to the West Coast with Podair and SABR members Andy McCue, Lee Lowenfish, and Rob Garratt.

Podair won the Seymour Medal — which honors the best book of baseball history or biography published during the preceding calendar year — for City of Dreams: Dodger Stadium and the Birth of Modern Los Angeles, published by Princeton University Press.

The Seymour Medal, named in honor of Dr. Harold Seymour and Mrs. Dorothy (Seymour) Mills, was first awarded by SABR in 1996. To be considered for the medal, a work must be the product of original research or analysis. The winning book shall significantly advance our knowledge of baseball and shall be characterized by understanding, factual accuracy, profound insight and distinguished writing.

  • Get involved: Have memories of a game you attended? Or a game you watched that caught your interest? Write about it! Writing for the Games Project is an easy way to get involved as a SABR member. Find out how by reading the Games Project FAQs section or checking out the Authors’ Guidelines. We have editors and fact checkers who are willing to help you write your first article.
  • Read stories from Tiger Stadium greatest games book: In SABR’s Tigers by the Tale: Great Games at Michigan and Trumbull, edited by Scott Ferkovich and published in 2016, we told the stories of memorable moments at one of baseball’s most famous corners: Detroit’s Tiger Stadium. All of the stories that appeared in this book are now available to be read online at the SABR Games Project by clicking here.

SABR Games Project: Make a donation in memory of Greg Erion

On December 29, 2017, SABR member Greg Erion, 70, who had taken on the brunt of necessary reorganization of the SABR Games Project, died of cancer diagnosed just a few weeks earlier. Despite treatments, Greg worked tirelessly to assure a smooth transition for everyone involved with the Games Project.

Some members closely involved with the Games Project have already made donations to SABR honoring Greg’s memory as a friend and colleague. We ask that others who knew and worked with Greg consider doing the same to honor his leadership, sense of easy cooperation, and tireless work for the advancement of an important SABR initiative.

Not only will a donation in Greg’s name honor him, but it will advance SABR’s continuing work on all fronts and serve the collaborative spirit of the organization.

You can give a memorial tribute by visiting SABR.org/donate and adding Greg Erion’s name in the “Tribute Information” section when you make your contribution.
