Call for papers: 2023 The National Pastime
The next SABR convention will be held on July 5-9, 2023, in Chicago, and we are seeking articles for our annual convention journal, The National Pastime, on teams, figures, and events around Chicago, Illinois, and other areas of the Midwest.
If you have an idea for an engaging, impeccably researched article on any aspect of baseball in the Midwest, including people, players, teams, stadiums, leagues, championships, and more, please email an abstract or article topic description, along with expected word count length and information on how you plan to research the topic, with email subject line “TNP: 2023” to PubDir@sabr.org by Friday, December 30, 2022. First drafts will be due in March 2023, with final drafts needed by the end of April 2023.

Call for papers: 2023 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference
SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee will host the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on July 20-23, 2023, in Detroit, Michigan. In addition to two days of research presentations and player/author panels, attendees will also enjoy special presentations about local Black baseball and a baseball game as part of the Detroit Tigers’ Negro Leagues Weekend.
This interdisciplinary conference welcomes proposals for oral and poster presentations from all research fields. This year’s theme is “Turkey Stearnes Centennial, the Negro Leagues and Civil Rights.” Please email your proposal as a Word attachment to Dr. Leslie Heaphy before March 6, 2023.

Fred McGriff elected to Baseball Hall of Fame by Contemporary Era Committee
Five-time All-Star and 1995 World Champion Fred McGriff earned election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday via the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee process.
McGriff was the only candidate elected from the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee Players Ballot, which was considered by a 16-member committee, including SABR member Steve Hirdt of the Elias Sports Bureau, that held meetings in San Diego. The eight-person ballot was comprised of candidates whose primary contribution to the game came from 1980 to the present.

Apply now for a SABR Local Grant in 2023
The SABR Local Grants program provides an opportunity for chapters, research committees, and chartered communities to apply for funding for their projects under SABR’s Four Pillars: Research, Scholarship, Preservation, and Future of the Game. Applications are now open for a 2023 SABR Local Grant at SABR.org/local-grants. Submissions will be accepted until January 16, 2023.
All SABR chapters, chartered communities, and research committees are eligible to apply. Individual SABR members and non-SABR groups are not eligible, so if you have an individual idea for a program grant, please follow up with your local chapter leadership or appropriate research committee to discuss an application.

Early registration open for 2023 SABR Analytics Conference in Phoenix
Early registration is now open for the SABR Analytics Conference, which will be held in person from March 10-12, 2023, at the Beus Center for Law and Society on Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix Campus in Phoenix, Arizona. Register today to join us!
General sessions will be held in person on Friday, March 10 through Sunday, March 12 at the Beus Center for Law and Society in downtown Phoenix. General Session registration includes access to all programming held at the Beus Center for Law and Society, including research presentations, panel discussions, Friday evening networking reception, a boxed lunch on Friday and Saturday afternoon, and coffee talks on Saturday and Sunday morning.
Students will have two registration options, virtual or in-person, with both including access to the General Session on Friday, March 10 through Sunday, March 12, and a student-only virtual session on Thursday, March 9.
- Registration: Click here to register for the 2023 SABR Analytics Conference. Early-bird registration is $395 for SABR members, $495 for non-members, and $150 for currently enrolled high school or college students. Student-only virtual registration is $50.
- Student Registration: Students should email Scott Carter with a photo of their student ID to receive a special link to register at a discounted rate laden with extra benefits. Students have the option of choosing virtual ($50) or in-person ($150) registration. All student registrations also include a complimentary one-year SABR membership ($25 value) and a complimentary Rapsodo certification course ($395 value).

Students, apply now for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend the 2023 SABR Analytics Conference
With generous funding from The Nanar and Anthony Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to high school and college students who wish to attend the SABR Analytics Conference on March 10-12, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona. This scholarship will pay for registration, transportation and lodging fees associated with the conference up to a total value of $1,250.
The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage student engagement with baseball analytics, and to engender an active interest in baseball research and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend the SABR Analytics Conference and to introduce them to fellow SABR members and professionals within the baseball community. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

Episode #191 on Monday, December 5 featured Brian McRae, who spent 10 seasons as an outfielder in the major leagues with the Kansas City Royals and four other teams. From 1991 to 1994, he played for his father, Royals manager Hal McRae. After retiring in 1999, he worked as an analyst for the Chicago Cubs, MLB.com Radio and ESPN’s Baseball Tonight. He is currently the general manager of the Kansas City Sluggers, a youth travel ball organization.
