Call for papers: 2023 The National Pastime
The next SABR convention will be held on July 5-9, 2023, in Chicago, and we are seeking articles for our annual convention journal, The National Pastime, on teams, figures, and events around Chicago, Illinois, and other areas of the Midwest.
For example, the Cubs’ television rights include Indiana and Iowa, which wouldn’t otherwise normally receive coverage in The National Pastime. Areas around Lake Michigan are also fair game.
If you have an idea for an engaging, impeccably researched article on any aspect of baseball in the Midwest, including people, players, teams, stadiums, leagues, championships, and more, please email an abstract or article topic description, along with expected word count length and information on how you plan to research the topic, with email subject line “TNP: 2023” to PubDir@sabr.org by Friday, December 30, 2022. First drafts will be due in March 2023, with final drafts needed by the end of April 2023.

Call for papers: 2023 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference
SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee will host the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, which will be held on July 20-23, 2023, in Detroit, Michigan. In addition to two days of research presentations and player/author panels, attendees will also enjoy special presentations about local Black baseball and a baseball game as part of the Detroit Tigers’ Negro Leagues Weekend.
This interdisciplinary conference welcomes proposals for oral and poster presentations from all research fields. This year’s theme is “Turkey Stearnes Centennial, the Negro Leagues and Civil Rights.” Previous presenters have included college faculty, public school teachers, graduate students, and independent scholars. Presentations may focus on any topic related to the theme, or other Negro Leagues issues, especially the Negro Leagues and Civil Rights. Some possibilities include Turkey Stearnes; the Detroit Stars; games at Hamtramck Stadium; integration and re-integration of baseball; ballplayers as civil rights pioneers and more.
Proposals should include a 250-word abstract, plus a brief biographical note with contact information. For oral presentations, please indicate whether you will require any AV equipment. For poster presentations, please indicate the number and size of posters you wish to display. Please email your proposal as a Word attachment to Dr. Leslie Heaphy before March 6, 2023.

Cliff Kachline Chapter unveils historical baseball exhibit in Gloversville, New York
SABR’s Cliff Kachline Chapter, the recipient of a SABR Local Grant in 2022, has completed the creation of a historical exhibit commemorating baseball in upstate New York. The new display in Gloversville, which also received funding from the Fulton County Baseball and Sports Hall of Fame along with private donations, is on the site of a former minor-league ballpark that served as a home to professional baseball dating back to 1895.
Notable players featured in the exhibit are Chuck Harmon and Jack McKeon. Harmon, a member of the Glovers in 1947 and 1949, would go on to become the first African-American player for the Cincinnati Reds in 1954. McKeon, a 1950 Glover, became a respected manager in both the minor leagues and major leagues, leading the Florida Marlins to a World Series championship in 2003.

In Memoriam: Gaylord Perry
Gaylord Perry was one of the premier pitchers of his generation, winning 314 games and striking out 3,534 batters during his 22-year Hall of Fame career. But his place in baseball history rests mainly with his notorious use of the spitball, or greaseball, which defied batters, humiliated umpires, and infuriated opposing managers for decades to come.
As Mark Armour writes at the SABR BioProject, “Make no mistake: Perry was also a brilliant craftsman with several excellent pitches in his repertoire, a hurler whose mastery of the spitter provided the batter yet another thing to think about as the pitch sailed toward the plate. After the game, he sheepishly denied any wrongdoing, slyly grinning like a poker player who knows he’s one step ahead of everyone else.”
Perry, who died at the age of 84 on Thursday, December 1, became the first pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in both the American and National Leagues, first with the Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians) in 1972 and with the San Diego Padres in 1978, when he was 39 years old.

Apply now for a SABR Local Grant in 2023
The SABR Local Grants program provides an opportunity for chapters, research committees, and chartered communities to apply for funding for their projects under SABR’s Four Pillars: Research, Scholarship, Preservation, and Future of the Game. Applications are now open for a 2023 SABR Local Grant at SABR.org/local-grants. Submissions will be accepted until January 16, 2023. A Grants Review Board will review all submissions and respond with their final determination in February 2023.
All SABR chapters, chartered communities, and research committees are eligible to apply. Individual SABR members and non-SABR groups are not eligible, so if you have an individual idea for a program grant, please follow up with your local chapter leadership or appropriate research committee to discuss an application.
The seven projects that received a SABR Local Grant in 2022 are well under way, including the dedication of a historical marker at Kelly Field in Daytona Beach, Florida, where Jackie Robinson and John Wright integrated Dodgers spring training in 1946; a new marker commemorating Roberto Clemente’s 3,000th hit at the site of Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh; and the repainting of a championship mural at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
