The next newsletter will be sent on Friday, January 6, 2023. Here’s what we’ve been up to as of December 21, 2022:
SABR 2022: Year in Review
From the long-awaited SABR 50 convention in Baltimore to a record high of 7,300 members to the launch of our new Local Grants and Analytics Certification programs, SABR has enjoyed a banner year in 2022. Thanks to all of our chapter and committee leaders, donors, writers, editors, volunteers, and contributors who have helped make the SABR community such a rewarding experience for so many baseball fans around the world!
This year, we published more than 1,200 articles online in the SABR Research Collection, including special collections from the Biography Project and Games Project. We launched a new monthly interview series, Ballpark Figures, with Shakeia Taylor, and held more than 170 virtual events online with authors, former players, and other guest speakers.
Thousands of SABR members enjoyed meeting new and old friends by attending the SABR Analytics Conference, the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference, the Women in Baseball Conference, and the Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Conference.
New books from the SABR Digital Library included titles on Roberto Clemente, Canadian baseball history, and the first Negro National League champions. The Century Committee published web projects on Baseball and the Supreme Court and the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s debut. The Landmarks Committee unveiled its new interactive Baseball Map, the Oral History Committee posted dozens of new interviews with significant baseball figures, and we relaunched The Baseball Index with more robust search features.
Thanks again for a spectacular 2022, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for SABR in 2023!

Read all essays from SABR’s ¡Arriba! The Heroic Life of Roberto Clemente
The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of Roberto Clemente’s final year in major-league baseball. ¡Arriba! The Heroic Life of Roberto Clemente, edited by Bill Nowlin and Glen Sparks and published by SABR earlier this year, celebrates his life and his baseball career.
The first universally acknowledged Latino inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Clemente played 18 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates, reaching the 3,000-hit milestone on the season’s last day in 1972. He was the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1966 and won two World Series with the Pirates in 1960 and 1971. Off the baseball diamond, Clemente was known for his charitable work. He lost his life on the final day of 1972 while working to provide relief for victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua.
