What’s Rob Reading?

Trevor Bauer

“Sabermetrics Might Be Revolutionizing Cheating”
By Rob Arthur, Baseball Prospectus

“With pine tar as with sign stealing, the common wisdom in baseball is “everybody does it.” There are so many examples of pitchers touching spots of sticky stuff on their caps (and being penalized for it) that even if some players aren’t cheating, plenty have clearly trod this path before. But even if literally everyone cheats this way, that doesn’t mean that everyone cheats equally skillfully. What (Trevor) Bauer has managed to do in increasing his spin rate goes far beyond anything previous pitchers have accomplished. And he surely can’t be the only pitcher to have played half his career clear of sticky substance before adopting it as he got older.”
