Neyer is a longtime baseball writer and editor for ESPN.com, SB Nation, and FoxSports.com. He began his career as a research assistant for groundbreaking baseball author Bill James and later worked for STATS, Inc. He has also written or co-written seven baseball books, including The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers (with Bill James), winner of the Sporting News/SABR Baseball Research Award, and most recently Power Ball: Anatomy of a Modern Baseball Game, winner of the 2019 CASEY Award.

This week’s guest is Brandon McCarthy, former major-league pitcher and current Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Texas Rangers. He spent 13 seasons in the big leagues with the Oakland A’s, Arizona Diamondbacks, and five other clubs. His interest in learning more about sabermetrics helped him reinvent his pitching style and achieve a breakout season in 2011 with the A’s, when he led the American League in Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) at 2.86. He appeared in the 2017 World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is also a minority owner of Phoenix Rising FC in the USL Championship soccer league. He was a featured speaker at the SABR Analytics Conference in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
