Read SABR biographies of Baseball Hall of Fame’s Early Baseball and Golden Days finalists

The results of the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Early Baseball Era Committee vote and the Golden Days Era Committee vote will be announced live on MLB Network at 6:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, December 5.

The Early Baseball Era voting electorate includes SABR members Gary Ashwill, Adrian Burgos Jr., Leslie Heaphy, Justice Hill, Steve Hirdt, and John Thorn. Burgos and Hirdt are also part of the Golden Days Era voting electorate.

Seven Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues legends and three American League/National League stars comprise the 10-name Early Baseball Era ballot, which features candidates whose primary contribution to the game came prior to 1950. The Golden Days Era Committee considers candidates whose primary contribution to the game came from 1950-69.

The Early Baseball Era ballot includes Bill Dahlen, John Donaldson, Bud Fowler, Vic Harris, Grant “Home Run” Johnson, Lefty O’Doul, Buck O’Neil, Dick “Cannonball” Redding, Allie Reynolds, and George “Tubby” Scales.

The Golden Days Era ballot includes Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Roger Maris, Minnie Miñoso, Danny Murtaugh, Tony Oliva, Billy Pierce, and Maury Wills. Of this group, Kaat, Oliva and Wills are living.

Call for papers: 2022 The National Pastime

The summer 2022 issue of SABR’s convention journal, The National Pastime, will have a theme of the Minor Leagues. Open to all topics relating to the minors, including both affiliated and unaffiliated leagues/teams. The history of minor league baseball parallels that of the majors, stretching back into the 19th century. Before major-league expansion, the only baseball west of St. Louis was minor-league ball.

We are seeking engaging, impeccably researched articles on any aspect of minor league baseball, including people, players, teams, stadiums, leagues, between-inning entertainment, championships, and more. Personal essays and interviews will also be considered alongside research papers, but their slots will be limited.

Please email an abstract or article topic description, along with expected word count length and information on how you plan to research the topic, with email subject line “TNP: Minor Leagues” to PubDir@sabr.org by Monday, December 6, 2021. First drafts will be due in February 2022, with final drafts needed by the end of April 2022.

SABR dedicates John Dodge grave marker at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville

On Thursday, December 2, SABR’s Pee Wee Reese Chapter in Louisville, Kentucky, dedicated a memorial at Cave Hill Cemetery for John Lewis Dodge, a professional baseball player who died after being hit by a pitched ball in 1916. Thursday’s ceremony was part of a larger project planned in 2022 to celebrate the history of baseball in Louisville.

Dodge, an infielder for the Mobile Sea Gulls and a Louisville resident, was playing in a minor league game against the Nashville Vols when tragedy struck in the seventh inning.

The placement and unveiling of Dodge’s marker in Cave Hill Cemetery will be the kickoff for additional historical Louisville baseball activities.

Early registration now open for 2022 SABR Virtual Analytics Conference

Early registration is now open for the SABR Virtual Analytics Conference, which will be held over three days in online sessions from March 18-20, 2022. We’ll bring together the top minds in the baseball analytics community to discuss, debate, and share insightful ways to analyze and examine the great game of baseball. Register today to join us!

The Virtual Analytics Conference schedule consists of research presentations and guest speakers from throughout the baseball analytics community, career development sessions led by experienced sports professionals, and industry networking opportunities — all available online for any aspiring front office executive or baseball fan to attend from the comfort of home. Students will have opportunities for skill acquisition and development, including sessions on how to work with baseball-related data sets as well as databasing and SQL.

Apply now to participate in the 2022 Diamond Dollars Virtual Case Competition

The 2022 Diamond Dollars Case Competition will be held online beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET on Friday, March 18, 2022, as part of the SABR Virtual Analytics Conference. Four- to five-person student teams are asked to evaluate a baseball operations case problem. The student team presents their analysis and recommendations to a panel of judges that includes MLB front office executives.

Registration is $1,750 per team, which includes admission to all SABR Virtual Analytics Conference sessions and a one-year SABR membership for each participant. SABR accepting applications for Membership Services Manager position

We’re now seeking applications for a new full-time position based at the SABR office, located in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in downtown Phoenix.

The Membership Services Manager will lead SABR’s membership service efforts, including new member on-boarding, member communications, and membership transactions. As our Membership Services Manager, you will be responsible for membership retention and helping chapters develop their membership. An integral part of ensuring the success of our baseball community, this position will help drive SABR’s future growth and support the organization’s vision.

Apply now for a SABR Local Grant in 2022

While we continue to celebrate SABR’s 50th anniversary this year, we are keeping a keen eye on our organization’s future and have so many exciting projects on deck. In 2022, we will deliver the SABR Local Grants program. This initiative will provide an opportunity for chapters, research committees, and chartered communities to apply for funding for their projects under SABR’s Four Pillars: Research, Scholarship, Preservation, and Future of the Game. In total, $10,000 in SABR Local Grants will be awarded in 2022!

All SABR chapters, chartered communities, and research committees are now eligible to apply, until January 30, 2022. Individual SABR members and non-SABR groups are not eligible, so if you have an individual idea for a program grant, please follow up with your local chapter leadership or appropriate research committee to discuss an application.

2021 Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference Art Contest winners announced

The 11th annual Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference Art Contest attracted artwork from all over the nation. Art from the winners will be on display at the upcoming Jerry Malloy Conference, which will be held June 2-4, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama. The winners are:

Amateur: Brian Callaghan, Richmond, VA
Youth: Gabrielle Davis, Moody, AL

The winning entry in the amateur category will receive a $150 prize and a certificate from the conference and the youth winner will receive $100 and a certificate from the conference.

Photos of the art will also be included in an upcoming issue of Black Ball: A Negro Leagues Journal, published by McFarland & Co.

Retrosheet announces Fall 2021 updates

I am pleased to announce the Fall 2021 update of Retrosheet’s website. The highlights of the new release are as follows.

Deduced files have now been completed for 1925 and 1924 and are on our site along with games from 2021 season. Therefore, we now have play-by-play accounts for all American and National league games from 1924-2021, meaning the last 98 seasons.

Updates continue to be made in time of game and attendance data, along with ejections.

We plan to add game-level Negro League data to our site in the next few weeks. This large project has been managed by Tom Thress and there will be much detail announced at the appropriate time.

Prior to SIS, he worked for nearly 16 years as a researcher at ESPN, including eight seasons on Baseball Tonight. He also has more than two decades of experience as a play-by-play broadcaster for a variety of college sports, including at his alma mater, The College of New Jersey.
