Neyer is a longtime baseball writer and editor for ESPN.com, SB Nation, and FoxSports.com. He began his career as a research assistant for groundbreaking baseball author Bill James and later worked for STATS, Inc. He has also written or co-written seven baseball books, including The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers (with Bill James), winner of the Sporting News/SABR Baseball Research Award, and most recently Power Ball: Anatomy of a Modern Baseball Game, winner of the 2019 CASEY Award.

John McLaren (Courtesy of the World Baseball Classic)This week’s guest is John McLaren, former major-league manager who has spent more than 50 years in baseball. He served as manager of the Seattle Mariners in 2007-08 and the Washington Nationals in 2011. He also managed the Chinese national team in the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classics, and has served on the coaching staffs for Team USA (2006 WBC) and Team Italy (2010 Intercontinental Cup). After catching for six seasons in the Houston Astros organization, his coaching career began in 1979 and he has worked for six different clubs, most recently with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017.
