The inaugural SABR Analytics Conference, presented by Bloomberg Sports and Major League Baseball, was held on March 15-17, 2012, at the Hilton Phoenix East/Mesa. Oakland A’s pitcher Brandon McCarthy spoke about how analytics has changed his approach to the game. Cleveland Indians president Mark Shapiro sat down for an exclusive Q&A with Ken Rosenthal and Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts was interviewed by Vince Gennaro. Our General Managers Panel included Chris Antonetti, Doug Melvin and Jerry Dipoto. The Clubhouse Confidential Panel included Dave Cameron, Jay Jaffe, Rob Neyer, and Vince Gennaro. The Changing Face of Baseball Data Panel included Dave Cameron, John Dewan, Sean Forman, and Cory Schwartz. The Scouting and Analytics Panel included A.J. Hinch, Corrine Vitolo, Joe Bohringer, and Dan Migala. The Digital World Meets Baseball Information panel included Rob Shaw, Jeff Bennett, Ryan Zander, and Michele Steele. 2013 SABR Analytics Conference
March 7-9, 2013
ASU Cronkite School / Sheraton Phoenix Downtown
The second annual SABR Analytics Conference, presented by Major League Baseball and Bloomberg Sports, was held on March 7-9, 2013. The event kicked off on Thursday at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and continued on Friday and Saturday at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. To open the conference, MLB Network host Brian Kenny spoke on the current and future state of his show, “Clubhouse Confidential”, as baseball analytics evolve. NBC Sports columnist Joe Posnanski addressed the role of stats and stories in sports. Los Angeles Dodgers President and CEO Stan Kasten was interviewed by Vince Gennaro. The keynote speech was given by sabermetric pioneer Bill James, the Boston Red Sox’s Senior Advisor on Baseball Operations. Our Player Panel included Brandon McCarthy, Javier López, and Steve Berthiaume. The General Managers Panel included Jon Daniels, Rick Hahn, Jed Hoyer, and Brian Kenny. The Clubhouse Confidential Panel included Brian Kenny, Rob Neyer, Dave Cameron, and Vince Gennaro. The Analytics Super Panel included Bill James, Joe Posnanski, and Brian Kenny. The Player Development Panel included Derek Falvey, Tyrone Brooks, Yeshayah Goldfarb, and Rob Neyer. The Player Agent Panel included Casey Close, Gregg Clifton, and Rex Gary. The Business of Baseball Analytics track included four sessions: Marketing-Mixed Optimization: Agent-Based Modeling Approach with Damon Ragusa and Alex King; Using Research and Analytics to Impact Revenue with Bill Nielsen; Strategic Fan Segmentation in MLB with Eric Paquette; and Executive Revenue with Dan Derian, Barry Kahn, Andrew Miller, Zaheer Benjamin, and Dan Migala.

The Medical Analysis and Injury Prevention Panel included Dr. Stan Conte, Dr. Glenn Fleisig, Chris Marinak, and Buster Olney. The Which Numbers Athletes Love, Which Numbers Athletes Hate Panel included Aaron Boone, Eduardo Pérez, Manny Acta, Kirk Goldsberry, and John Walsh. The Analytics from the Players’ View Panel included Brandon McCarthy, Brian Bannister, and Jon Sciambi. Alongside Dan Migala, Chicago Cubs front office executives Jed Hoyer and Scott Harris discussed the Chicago Cubs’ five-year journey to the World Series. The General Manager Panel included Jerry Dipoto, Mike Hazen, and Brian Kenny. The Analytics of Hitting, Pitching, and Catching Panel included Jessica Mendoza, Eno Sarris, Vince Gennaro, and Dan Migala. Baseball analyst and author Bill James discussed the future of baseball analysis. The MLB Advanced Media Statcast Panel included Tom Tango, Mike Petriello, Daren Willman, and Mike Ferrin. Broadcasters Jim Deshaies, Jon “Boog” Sciambi, and Mike Ferrin spoke about the role of analytics in baseball broadcasts. The Diversity in Baseball Panel included Tyrone Brooks, Renée Tirado, Sarah Gelles, and Vince Gennaro. The Technology Panel included Jordan Muraskin, Daniel M. Laby, Brian Murphy, and Brett Kurland.

Brian Kenny, Jon Sciambi, Eno Sarris, and Rob Neyer explored whether or not the media is doing its part to advance the analytics discussion. The Diverse Perspectives Panel included Dr. Lorena Martin, Ehsan Bokhari, Philip Cho, Emilee Fragapane, and Vince Gennaro. The Keeping Data Flowing Panel included Kyle Boddy, Mike Petriello, Joe Rosales, and Mike Ferrin. The Training Pitchers Panel included Dr. Steven Cadavid, Seth Daniels, Scott Radinsky, Eno Sarris, and Steve Berthiaume. MLB’s Greg Cain, Travis Peterson, Cory Schwartz, and Daren Willman reflected on the evolution of Statcast through its first five years and explored the system’s future. MLB Baseball Scientist Clay Nunnally discussed the concept of Lidar and Ground Truth Testing. The Game Within a Game Panel included Emilee Fragapane, Dr. Lee Picariello, Julian Volyn, and Rob Neyer. The Analyze This: The Varying Roles and Skillsets of Baseball Analysts Panels included Ehsan Bokhari, Maggie O’Hara, Josh Ruffin, and Eduardo Pérez. MLB Baseball Scientist Clay Nunnally and Dr. Paul Hawkins of Hawk-Eye Innovations gave a talk on pitch tracking methods in the Statcast system. The MLB Statcast Player Pose Tracking and Visualization Panel included Graham Goldbeck, Marc Squire, and Sid Sethupathi.
