Karl Spooner (National Baseball Hall of Fame Library)“The Last Good Pitch”
By Sam Miller, Pebble Hunting

“Roy Campanella called Karl Spooner the hardest thrower he’d ever caught, and teammate Clem Labine called his fastball “unbelievable for how much the ball moved.” Sandy Koufax, the man Leo Durocher had called “the best pitcher I’ve ever seen,” called Spooner “as good as anybody you’ve ever seen.” Both pitchers, Spooner and Koufax, would pitch through pain for years. Both would be remembered for having arms that modern medicine might have saved, had the medicine gotten just a little more modern a little more quickly.”
